Science is cool

Of Dinosaurs and Sponges

June7

So you’ve heard the news about the Creation Museum in KY. Well also this week, at US-Santa Barbra, researchers discovered the origin of the nervous system.

It seems to me that the nuts in KY will never understand a process that takes millions of years, when they are stuck with Seventeenth Century thinking. Also the notion of an inerrant Bible is not compatible with ideas that question the Bible’s accuracy.

Now back to the research…What I find fascinating is that before evolution created animals, the framework for me writing this article was already in existence. And that minor changes were all that were need to form the synaps.

Why are there no Unicorns?

May27

From Physorg.com, has nothing to do with unicorns per se. It looks at the mathematical model of how flowers form during branching. Using this model, the authors were able to show that while there are many ways that flowers can form during branching, only a few evolved naturally.

Protein May Be Key to Brain’s Evolution

May9

From Forbes.com, In China, they have compared a protein called neuropsin, between humans and other primates. They discovered that it split from other primates about 5 million years ago and is involved in memory and learning.

To think that before Humans were Homo that a major evolutionary change occured that would lead to modern humans. That memories and teaching the young would start the Stone Age. Makes one wonder what were the changes that lead to art.

That Evolution Thing

March20

So Rogers AR maybe the new Dover. Parents there seem to want “critical thinking” about evolution. But I doubt that any critical thinking about “creation science” will be allowed.

Cool shit in OZ. The South Australia Museum will be displaying fossils from the Ediacaran period. These PreCambrian fossils are some of the oldest animal fossils.

And finally, some help for the RNA World hypothesis. The discovery of a RNA enzyme that acts like RNA polymerase(meaning that it can join pieces of RNA together) is big news. Abstract

Evolution News

A couple of items:

From Reuters.com, in China the fossil ear bones of a mammal have been found. It fills the gap between the earliest mammals and modern mammals. And proves the theory that the mammal ear bones came from its ancesteral reptile’s jaw.

From the National Geographic, hybridization many be more common in animals than previously thought. The recent finding of a grizzly bear and polar bear hybred, may be the tip of the iceberg, so to speak.

Happy Darwin Day!!!

February13

Today is Charles Darwin’s Birthday. Hopfully there’s an event near you. Unfortunately the nearest one to me is ~50 miles way and our car shouldn’t be driven that far. Sigh.

Complexity constrains evolution of human brain genes

December28

From Physorg.com, looking at the genes from a group of humans it was found that the more complex the brain became the less it evolved. The protein interactions within the brain seem to be intolerent to mutations. See article.
